What the sewer line does
The main sewer line is the underground pipe that carries wastewater from every drain in your home out to the municipal sewer or septic system. Because every fixture feeds into it, trouble here affects the whole house, not just one sink.
Common causes of problems:
- Tree roots that work into joints and grow inside the pipe.
- Pipe damage such as cracks, breaks or collapsed sections.
- Buildup of grease, debris and waste along the pipe walls.
- Belly sections, low spots where the pipe has sagged and waste collects.
Warning signs
Watch for these signs that something is wrong with the main line:
| Sign | What you may notice |
|---|---|
| Multiple slow drains | Several fixtures drain slowly at once, not just one. |
| Sewage odors | A sewage smell inside the home or around the yard. |
| Backups | Wastewater coming up through floor drains, tubs or toilets. |
| Soggy yard areas | Wet or soft patches in the yard along the line. |
Camera inspection and diagnosis
Guessing is costly when the pipe is underground. A camera inspection sends a small camera through the line so the problem can be seen directly: roots, a crack or break, heavy buildup or a belly section. Seeing what is inside the pipe and where it is lets the repair be matched to the actual problem.
Cleaning vs. repair or replacement
Cleaning
Fits when the pipe is basically sound but blocked by buildup or roots. The goal is to clear what is obstructing flow.
Repair or replacement
Fits when the pipe itself is damaged, such as cracks, breaks or a belly section. Clearing a blockage will not fix a pipe that is broken or sagging, so the damaged section is repaired or replaced.
The camera findings tell us which one your line needs.
What to expect
How do I know if the problem is the main sewer line?
Several slow drains at once, sewage odors, backups and soggy yard areas all point toward the main line rather than a single fixture.
What does a camera inspection show?
It shows the condition of the inside of the pipe, including roots, damage, buildup and belly sections.
Will I need cleaning or a repair?
That depends on what the inspection finds. Blockages are generally cleaned, while damaged pipe is repaired or replaced.
